The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State is facing a major political crisis as a wave of resignations hit the party, with many defectors aligning themselves with Mazi Chima Amadi, a prominent political figure believed to be gearing up for the 2027 governorship race in Imo.
The exodus, which includes key party leaders and grassroots mobilizers, signals a significant shift in the state’s political landscape and poses a formidable challenge to Governor Hope Uzodinma’s grip on the APC.
In recent weeks, several high-profile APC members have tendered their resignations, while some cited dissatisfaction with the current administration and a desire to support Mazi Chima Amadi’s vision for Imo State, others were mum about plans.
Among those who have defected are former local government chairmen, state assembly members, and influential party stalwarts who played crucial roles in securing Governor Uzodinma’s re-election in 2023.
Sources close to the defectors reveal that their decision to leave the APC stems from growing discontent with the Uzodinma administration’s policies and governance style.
Many have expressed confidence in Mazi Chima Amadi’s leadership qualities, describing him as a “unifying figure” capable of addressing the state’s challenges and fostering inclusive development.
Although he has yet to declare his intentions, Mazi Chima Amadi’s growing influence and the defection of APC members to his camp suggest that he is the likely consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
Amadi’s appeal cuts across party lines, with reports indicating that more leaders from opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), are set to join his movement, The Mazi Organisation (TMO) in the coming months.
