A leader of thought, business man and stakeholder in the Imo project, Chief Sam Anokam has condemned calls from certain quarters that Governor Hope Uzodinma should not adhere to the Imo charter of equity, describing such calls as coming from enemies of the state and also encouraging the governor to enshrine his name on the sands of time by giving Imolites this much desired instrument of peace, unity and development.
Speaking to newsmen in Owerri last weekend, Chief Sam Anokam who is a renowned Estate Surveyor went down memory lane to describe how the Imo charter of equity initiated by Chief I.D. Nwoga and Prof. Echeruo and others with the interest of the state at heart, was truncated in 2007 by former INEC chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu who used his contacts INEC to install Chief Ikedi Ohakim as state governor against the spirit of the charter which should have seen someone from Owerri zone as governor.
However, according to Chief Anokam, Chief Uzodinma’s emergence as governor was only due to his desire to rescue ndimo from former Governor Okorocha whose only desire was to build a family political dynasty, with nothing to do with the charter of equity, hence the need for all well- meaning Imolites to support the governor to succeed and reposition the state on the pathway of progress and all round development.
Chief Anokam observed that Governor Hope Uzodinma”s first tenure was focused on rebuilding the state’s dilapidated infrastructure which is commendable, urging him to do more in rural development like equipping the health centers with good doctors, Nurses and facilities, market development, food security through concentration in agricultural development, improving our educational system and other investments geared towards increasing the quality of life of the citizens.
Anokam maintained that Governor Hope Uzodinma could turn the state around by having his next cabinet star- studded with people of credibility who are ready to serve the state and not people coming to make money.
Noting that Uzodinma’s overwhelming victory in the last governorship election across the entire 27 LGAs of the state was reminiscent of late Governor Sam Mbakwe’s popularity in 1983, Chief Anokam advised the governor that though pressure would be much on him from many people and groups across the state, yet he should adhere strictly to competence in appointments so as to deliver quality results to the people.
Also speaking on the deteriorating security condition within the FUTO area, Chief Sam Anokam who also is the authorized Attorney of FUTO host communities in their dispute with the university, urged the host communities to liaise with the university and state government and go into the area with bulldozers to clear the bushes that have become a den of kidnappers and other dangerous criminals, arguing that this would help allow women to return to their farms.
