Sequel to the ongoing shutdown of Imo over the reported assault of the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress ( NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, the Convener of Imo Christian Youth Peace Initiative ( ICYPI) and the Director of Legal and Publicity to the Christian Association of Nigeria, Imo State branch, Barr. Oluchukwu Green Nnabugwu has called for a peaceful resolution between the Union and the state government.
This is even as he appealed to the union to call off the “shutdown” action considering the November 11 governorship election and the hardship that is already traumatizing the people as a result of lack of electricity and restriction of frights in and outside the state.
Speaking with Journalists in Owerri , Barr. Nnabugwu who is also the Chairman Southern Youth Wing of CAN further sympathized with the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero over the reported assault meted on him in the state while reiterating that other measures of settlement could have been taken against the government or they could exploit other legal avenues like petitioning the police for investigations and then to court rather than allowing the masses which are supposed to be the utmost priority for the creation of the union, to languish in penury as a result of the shutdown action.
” Election time is always a sensitive period in every circle of government. There are things ordinarily one might want to do but considering that it is an election period, it will be shelve. Comrade Ajaero who is the National president of NLC has been doing well, and I sincerely sympathize with him over the unfortunate incident in his own State but I feel that there is lack of wisdom in his actions and his actions can be perceived to be suspicious. If I were him I will never engage with Imo State Government directly being an indegine.i will send delegation. It is not mandatory that the president of NLC must be in good terms with his own Governor because relationship is not by force. But wisdom calls that the situation where the state is going through the electioneering process, security threats , and all that, I feel shutting down the state few days to election is not the best solution to resolving the conflict”. Let me say this.NLC should watch it.. they are losing the support of people on this Matter and soon their house scatter it care is not taken”.
“From security information, it was recorded that they were altercations on that faithful day among the union members. Let us not also forget that there are factions of Imo labour leadership in the state, whereas Comrade Ajaero is backing a faction, the state government is supporting another faction. The truth is that the two factions are all NLC members. We were also reliably informed that there are court interim orders which lasts for 7 days. The order was said to had been renewed stopping NLC from embarking on any kind of rally. It is a clear fact that Fractions will always try to undue each other but why I’m surprised is that I cannot directly connect the governor to the incident, people connected were the two fractions and the police”.
The Christian Youth Boss further charged the union not to be biased and political irrespective of the fact that they have a party and candidate that is affiliated with the union which is Labour party LP.
“Political party is a group of people with a common interest to seize government in a democratic process, take over the government and run the government. If the government is saying that Ajaero’s visit has political connotation, it will not be doubted as demonstrations/ rallies could have been held before this time. Even if the rallies were obstructed because of court order, which the government is saying they have another court order over it, why must the shut down be at the last minute of election when campaign is going on? Wisdom should have called that it can happen some other time. Ajaero is a National leader and for the fact that it’s from his state, he should advocate for peace”.
” I therefore call upon CAN and other religious and political associations to rise against the shutdown in other to avert untimely deaths of poor Imo indigenes and untold hardship. I also charge all eligible voters to come out en mass on Saturday, November 11 to vote for their preferred candidate.
