Civil Servants, business Men and skilled workers living in Owerri may shun traveling to Villages for the 2024 Christmas celebration over the ongoing hardship in Nigeria and Imo on particular. The hardship in Nigeria and Imo in particular has risen to the extent that some parents have withdrawn their Children and Wards in the private Schools. Recently, proprietors of private Schools in Imo appealed to Uzodinma led administration to come to their aid, stressing the continuous reduction in the number of pupils in their various Schools . Our Reporter who has been in talk with people living in Owerri particularly the Civil Servants revealed that majority of the civil Servants are of the view that they would not be traveling homes for the Christmas celebration as well as other activities given the cost of living in the State pointing out that transportation is on the high side, food items like Rice which a bag is over One hundred thousand amongst Others. The Civil Servants were of the view that it would make no sense, traveling homes with the little they have in the name of Christmas celebration and return January to face problems of payment of school fees of the Children and that of House rents. They however appealed to Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma to consider paying them the new minimum wage which according to them would make life a bit better for them. It would be recalled that Imo State Government had recently promised the workers that sooner than later, they would start receiving the new Minimum Wage of Seventy Thousand. However, while the State is yet to begin the payment of the minimum wage, the leadership of the Labour Union has announced the deadline of non payment of the minimum wage to December 31st 2024.
