Imo State House of Assembly has passed a bill to make skill acquisition and craftsmanship mandatory in every primary and secondary school and also to establish same in tertiary Institutions in the state.
The bill sponsored by the member representing Oguta State Constituency, Hon. Engr. Gilbert Chiedozie Nwosu was passed during the plenary on Thursday 14th March, 2024. The bill’s consideration was after it went through Committee of the whole House on same day.
The second Reading of this bill was presented at the hallow chamber on Tuesday 31st January, 2024 as it was confirmed by the Standing House Committee on Education.
Speaking shortly after the passage of the bill, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, member representing Ihitte Uboma State Constituency commended the lawmakers for participating actively throughout the consideration of the bill.
Olemgbe said the state legislature under his watch would continue to give needed attention to bills and motions that would further advance development of the state.
The Lawmaker who threw light in the bill while addressing House of Assembly Correspondents in his office said the bill would reduce over dependence on white collar jobs by the school leavers.
“The unemployment rate in the country is as a result of much reliant on government to provide job for them when there is no job out there”.
“Graduates suffer due to lack of skill and that’s why you see youths roaming about the street. “But with this bill, it will change the narratives,” he said. After the passage, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe directed the clerk to transmit the proposed law to the Governor for his assent.
