In a prestigious ceremony attended by prominent figures from Imo State and beyond, Owerri Club inducted 21 new members and honourable members from various fields of human endeavors.
This is even coming as the event also featured the historic investiture of Nze George Onwuanibe (KSM) as the club’s First Grand Patron.
The prestigious occasion, attended by high-ranking individuals within the state and in diaspora, was chaired by His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) Cletus Ilomuanya, CON, (the Obi of Obinugwu)
who is also the Chairman of both Imo State Council of Elders and Igbo Traditional Rulers Forum.
Also in attendance was the Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District, Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi.
In his speech, the Chairman of Owerri Club, Hon. Chief Charles Okeke (Odiuko), highlighted that Owerri Club, established in 1976, has long been a cornerstone of social and recreational life in Imo State. He emphasized the club’s mission to foster camaraderie, sportsmanship, and a sense of belonging among its diverse members.
“Today, as we honor His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, as our new President, we are confident that his leadership and guidance will elevate our club to even greater heights,” Okeke stated.
He extended his congratulations to the 21 new members and 8 Honourable members, encouraging them to actively participate and contribute to the club’s vibrant community. Okeke also expressed gratitude to the club’s members, benefactors, and supporters for their unwavering commitment, while seeking further support for key projects. These include the renovation and upgrading of the lawn tennis courts, expanding the solar system to a 25kVA capacity, completing the club’s conference hall, developing a mini-golf course, constructing a standard three-quarter football pitch, and remodeling the gym facility.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the occasion, His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) Cletus Ilomuanya, also commended the leadership of Owerri Club for their exceptional dedication and vision. He lauded their efforts in transforming the club into a vibrant and thriving institution, emphasizing that their commitment to progress has set a high standard for others to follow. Eze Ilomuanya expressed confidence that under the current leadership, Owerri Club would continue to grow and achieve even greater milestones.
In the same vain, Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi praised the leadership of Owerri Club, specifically commending the Chairman as a man of honor and integrity. He described the Chairman as trustworthy and dedicated to the club’s progress. Senator Onyewuchi also pledged his unwavering support for the leadership of Owerri Club, vowing to assist in all aspects of the club’s development and growth.
Among the newly inducted honorary members were HRM Eze Dr. Emmanuel Chukwuagina Okeke, Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers and South East Council of Traditional Rulers; Mr. Everest Okpara, Director of DSS; CP Aboki Danjuma; Dr. Charles Dimnwaobi Akusinachi, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development, Imo State; Ralph Nwosu, Esq; Dr. Achigbu Kingsley Ihedioha; and Dr. Charles Amadi.
The list of inductees also includes Chief C.O.C Akaolisa, Attorney General of Imo State; Frank Nneji; Rt. Hon. He acknowledged the club’s longstanding contribution to the social and recreational life of Imo State and commended the vision that continues to drive its growth. Eze Dr. Okeke emphasized the importance of strong leadership in fostering unity and development within organizations and expressed his optimism that the newly inducted members would bring fresh energy and ideas to the club’s future endeavors.
Answering questions from journalists after the event, Okeke remarked on the transformation Owerri Club has experienced under its current leadership. “Today is a remarkable and historic day for Owerri Club. Since its inception in 1976, the club has never witnessed such a monumental event. The positive impact we have seen is a testament to the quality of leadership and the trust members have in us,” he said.
He acknowledged the club’s earlier challenges, including low member participation and resistance to change from some quarters. However, with the induction of 21 new members, the club is rejuvenating. “When we started, there were barely 16 to 18 active members, most of whom were retired. Today, with the new inductees, we are injecting fresh energy into the club. The transformation is real, and the confidence people have in us is solid and fruitful, as evidenced by the overwhelming support from members at home and abroad,” Okeke added.
He also addressed some negative publications, attributing them to individuals resistant to the progress and growth of the club. Okeke reassured that more members are eager to join, and plans are underway for further inductions soon.
