In a bid to tackle insecurity in the state, Chairman of the Southern Youth Wing of CAN and Convener of Imo Christian Youth Peace Initiative, ICYPI, Barr. Oluchukwu Green Nnabugwu has called for the immediate ban of unauthorized scavengers across the state.

Speaking exclusively to midweek Lead, he stated that the state is currently facing a growing threat from unauthorized scavengers due to their detrimental impact on the security and well-being of residents.

According to him, “These individuals, coming from various states, have become synonymous with criminal activities, posing significant challenges for both the populace and the government”.

“At locations like Yaradua’s Drive, their nefarious activities have reached alarming levels. They brazenly dismantle electric solar lights installed by the state government, selling them to dealers operating from criminal hideouts. Such actions do not only undermine public infrastructure but also contribute to the illicit economy that fuel criminal enterprises”.

“Reports indicate that a staggering 20% of criminal incidents reported at different police stations are directly linked to these scavengers. They operate with impunity, importing individuals from different parts of the country and providing them with trucks to transport stolen goods, including property taken from residents’ homes. This pervasive criminality extends to remote areas, where unsuspecting citizens are left vulnerable to theft and vandalism”.

“Efforts to apprehend these criminals are met with resistance, as they are reportedly armed with knives and guns, ready to confront any opposition. This brazen display of violence further exacerbates the sense of insecurity among Imo residents, who are left feeling defenseless against such threats to their safety and property”.

The Imo born Youth Boss however called on the government to intervene and ban unauthorized scavengers as they have grown louder in recent times.

“A decisive measure is necessary to stem the tide of criminality and restore a sense of security to the populace. However, stakeholders also stress the importance of implementing alternative means of recycling to address environmental concerns without resorting to criminal activities”.

” Imo State authorities must collaborate with law enforcement agencies to crackdown on criminal syndicates and dismantle their networks. Simultaneously, efforts should be made to explore sustainable solutions for waste management and recycling, ensuring that environmental conservation goals are pursued without compromising public safety”, he submitted.
