Says no vacancy in Party
The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has refuted claims of a newly constituted interim executive within the party, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement signed by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Lancelot Obiaku, the PDP condemned a recent gathering convened by Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere in his hometown, Akokwa, where he reportedly declared an acting state chairman for the party.
The PDP described the move as “a charade” and dismissed Ugochinyere’s actions as illegitimate, stressing that he was expelled from the party in 2023 for anti-party activities and gross indiscipline.
“It is strange and ridiculous to imagine that an individual would gather a few loyalists in his sitting room to nullify the leadership of a democratically elected party structure,” the statement read. “What happened in Akokwa cannot be recognized as anything remotely close to party politics or administration.”
Reaffirming the legitimacy of its current leadership, the party outlined that duly conducted congresses were held at the ward, local government, and state levels on July 27, August 10, and August 31, 2024, respectively. According to the PDP, the processes were supervised by security agencies, including the DSS, and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with no record of parallel congresses or legal challenges.
“Those elected have since been performing their duties without contest. There is no dispute over the outcome of the congresses within the party or in any court of competent jurisdiction,” the statement added.
The party emphasized that Hon. Austin Nwachukwu remains the recognized State Chairman of the PDP in Imo State, alongside the established State Working Committee (SWC) and State Executive Committee (SEC). It also reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu’s position as the party leader in the state.
Warning against impersonation or attempts to destabilize the party, the PDP cautioned individuals involved in what it called “a campaign of mischief” to desist, adding that further infractions would be treated with the seriousness they deserve.
“There is no vacancy in the leadership of Imo PDP. The party remains focused on providing a credible political platform for the people of the state,” Obiaku concluded.
