The National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Imo State In Collaboration with the Office Of The Special Adviser to the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma On NARCOTICS And ILLICT DRUG MONITORING on Friday held One Day Sensitization Campaign Against Drug Abuse And Illicit Trafficking for the members of the Union.
The event took place at Arugo Motor Park Onitsha Owerri Road.
Speaking during the event the state Chairman Of NURTW , Comrade Jeff Eze noted that the programme focused more on the drug abuse and urged members of the Union particularly the drivers to desist from drug abuse .
Comrade Jeff expressed confidence that at the end of the programme the drivers will change their attitude towards
drug abuse
“I urged the drivers to desist from taking drug particularly alcohol when they are on the road because it will affect their thinking when they are on the road”
The NURTW Chairman used the opportunity to mandate the Branch Chairmen Of the Union not to load any vehicle belonging to any driver who is under the influence of Alcohol or drug.
He pointed out that the programme has exposed the dangers of drugs and said that the Union is making arrangement to ensure that the programme is a regular event in order to ensure zero tolerance of drug abuse in the state.
Also speaking the Adviser To State Governor On NARCOTICS And ILLICT DRUG MONITORING, Chief Eze Obonna Commended Comrade Jeff for his efforts to change the narrative of the Union and made members of the Union to understand that drug abuse can affect their body system especially the brain.
Chief Obonna stated that the state Government through his office has reduced drug abuse to bearest minimum
He promised that his office will continue to partner with NURTW on programmes and projects aim to reduce drug abuse .
In her Lecture the Commander National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Zone E, Dr Chiwendu Thompson also urged the drivers to stay away from drug abuse.
Dr Chiwendu noted that the commonly drug abuse is alcohol and stressed the need for them not to take alcohol
While driving, adding that drug abuse causes lack of motivation and concentration.
She Called on them to always report any case of drug abuse to their office for treatment.
In his speech the public Relation Officer Of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Mr Chinedu Igwe regretted that Some of the accidents on the road are as a result of alcohol intake by the drivers..
Mr Igwe made it clear that alcohol result to lost of memory and urged the drivers to use the road without causing harm to people.
