Okenna terms  GSS 91 a set old boys award as motivation for study

Class of ’91A set of Government Secondary School, Owerri Old Boys Association has given cash prizes to students who excelled in the competition they organized last year for SS3 students in Physics, Mathematics and Igbo Language.
    The prizes were given to  the first three students in Physics and Mathematics while compensation prizes were given to the first five students in Igbo Language who emerged from the competition.
   In an interview with our reporter on the occasion which took place at the school premisses last Thursday, the Chairman, 1991 set, Imo State chapter of Government Secondary School Old Boys Association, Mr Okenna Anugwelem disclosed that the preliminary of the competition was conducted on 19th and 20th of October 2024 while the final stage took place on 20th and 21st November same year, adding that the set gave compensation prizes to the first five Igbo Language students because they did not do well in the exams.
   Mr Anugwelem revealed that the essence of the competition was to prepare the students ahead of the forthcoming Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, SSCE and also identified the competition as a motivation to other students to study harder.
   He noted that the competition was also organized as an encouragement to SS1 and SS 2 students for them to get prepared for their upcoming SSCE as well as be witnesses, pointing out that the contestants tried their best but their performance was not encouraging.
   The Chairman expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the students in the competition which according to him was very poor because what they expected was not what they saw and stressed the need for the students to improve in their academics.
   He specially appreciated the sponsors of the competition including Engr Okwudili Okongwu who sponsored  Physics,  Mr Uche Andy Opara, the Igbo Language sponsor and Mr Kelechi Igbozuruike who sponsored Mathematics, commending them for impacting positively on the lives of the students.
   Also speaking, a member of the Organizing Committee of the competition, Ugochukwu Iroka encouraged the students to endeavour to work harder and perform better in subsequent competitions.
   In his remarks, the principal, Mr Darlington Uzoma Nwanya on behalf of the school management thanked the old boys for the laudable project and the passion they have for the students and their alma mater, stressing that the award of  prizes means that there is dignity in labour and reward for hard work.
   Mr Nwanya reminded them that teachers also need to be motivated for them to produce results and make more impact on the students.
   In the physics competition,  Emmanuel Gideon came first and received cheque of 200,000, Ubandu Delight came 2nd and got 150,000 while Anyanwu Martin Luther came 3rd and received 100,000.
   Reginald Gold Onyema  came first in the Mathematics competition and went home with a cheque of 100,000, Nelson Nwachukwu took the 2nd position and got 70,000 while Amaefule Richard Stanley came 3rd and received 50,000, compensation prizes of 20,000 was given to each of the first 5 students in Igbo Language, among other consolation prizes.
   Responding on behalf of other awardees, Emmanuel Gideon maintained that he was confident that he was going to make it and prayed for more grace on the organizers and sponsors of the competition, advising his fellow students to take their academics seriously.
   The Chairman, GSS, Owerri Old Boys Association, Imo State chapter, Engr Obioma Iwuamadi reminded the beneficiaries that to whom much is given, much is expected, they should put more effort in their academics.
