A professional body with the name Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria(CITN), Imo State chapter has championed the Institutionalization of Taxation as full fledged course of its department instead of subject in the Imo State University, Owerri.
This recommendation was disclosed when the leadership of the body paid a Courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of Imo State University Prof. U. U. Chukwumaeze (SAN) in his office on Wednesday 20th, 2024.
The Chairman, Lolo Mrs Angela Duru who led the delegation noted that the Association discovered that there was no department of Taxation in Imo State University inspite of the fact that the Institution has the capacity even in provision of books and structure, adding that inclusion of Taxation in the Institution school as a program would help in addressing the challenges facing the profession in the society.
Mrs Duru reminded the University Don that smaller Institutions like Polytechnics amongst other private Institutions have department of Taxation as she reflected on why the school has none.
In his remarks, the VC expressed gratitude to his guests for the visit, saying that it was an eye opener.
This is as he promised that the School would kick start the process immediately even as he commended the move.
“I want to thank you for this exciting plan, the school governing body will see what they can do about it. “This is a process that just commenced with your visit, it will go through some processes.
“It falls under the faculty of Management Science, we shall look at the skeletal factor” it must go through the Senate to the Curriculum committee before the National University Council for resource verification and back to the Senate, even the Professional body also has their input.
“So a journey of a thousand mile starts with a step and I think the journey has started”, he stated.
At press time, the Chairman Mrs Duru expressed delight over the outcome of the meeting, saying that as the taxation is the prevailing practice in the society so it is essential to embrace it.
According to her “both young and adult talk about taxation, even in secondary schools and that is why we deem it necessary to bring it to tertiary Institution to educate them on tax laws and policies.
In his submission, the Vice Chairman of the group, Deacon George Udo Okereke said bringing department of Taxation into the Institution would be advantageous because according to him, for the development of taxation one needs to catch them young.
He said: ” taxation should not be a subject in accounting or law but a full packaged course of its department.
He however described taxation as simply the management of the resources or revenue of an entity either the local government, the state or at the Federal level.
The highlight of the visit was the presentation of professional books to the the Vice Chancellor, Prof. U. U. Chukwumaeze by the Chairman Lolo Mrs Angela Duru.
Those in present from the Institution were the registrar, Dr. J. U. Osuagwu and the Bursar, Njoku Fidel O. among others
