Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi, a multidisciplinary Scholar and Advocate for Transparency and Good Governance, has delivered a thought-provoking keynote address at the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) Imo State Branch end-of-year get-together. The address, titled “Redefining the Political Landscape in Nigeria: The Role of Professionals,” emphasized the crucial role professionals must play in shaping Nigeria’s governance and political landscape.

Dr. Amadi began by highlighting Nigeria’s governance challenges, which have been criticized for their inability to address key developmental challenges effectively. He attributed this inefficiency to the dominance of career politicians lacking technical expertise. Dr. Amadi argued that professionals, with their specialized training and expertise, are uniquely positioned to bring a transformative approach to governance.

According to Dr. Amadi, professionals have a critical role to play in addressing Nigeria’s developmental challenges. He cited examples of professionals who have made positive contributions to Nigeria’s governance, including Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, Attahiru Jega, and Akinwumi Adesina. Dr. Amadi emphasized that professionals must reclaim their roles as custodians of ethical standards and champions of public trust.

The keynote address also highlighted the challenges faced by professionals in Nigeria’s governance. Dr. Amadi noted that many professionals have strayed from their ethical mandates, becoming enablers of corruption. He cited instances of election rigging involving university professors and returning officers, as well as accountants, lawyers, and bankers who facilitate money laundering and other illicit activities.

Dr. Amadi called on professionals to step beyond passive observation and engage actively in political and administrative processes. He advocated for stronger institutional oversight, strict ethical codes, and merit-based appointments to lead the charge toward reform. Dr. Amadi emphasized the need for a collective commitment to challenge corrupt practices, enhance public service delivery, and rebuild public trust in governance.

In conclusion, Dr. Amadi’s address emphasized the need for professionals to take active roles in reshaping Nigeria’s destiny. He urged professionals to leverage their expertise to craft evidence-based policies, ensure the efficient use of resources, and foster a governance culture rooted in transparency and accountability.

The event, which took place at the Imo State ANAN Secretariat, was attended by professionals from various fields, including accounting, law, medicine, and engineering. The address was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which participants engaged with Dr. Amadi on various aspects of his presentation.

Dr. Chima Matthew Amadi’s keynote address served as a clarion call to professionals in Nigeria to take action and reclaim their roles as custodians of ethical standards and champions of public trust. As Nigeria continues to grapple with governance challenges, the active engagement of professionals is crucial in shaping a better future for the country.
