The residents of Ikenegbu Extention by Dan Anyiam Stadium/Umunkwo Street, Owerri, have cried out to the Imo State government to come to their rescue to fix their roads, as their children and pregnant women now live in outright danger due to insecurity and environmental hazards.
The well-known road is now in a terrible condition as people now use it as a refuse dump, hence making the environment unhabitable.
According to Mr August Njoku, a resident of the area, people in the area are now regular patients in the hospital as the odor now causes children and pregnant women illnesses.
Mr Njoku emphasized that they no longer leave their doors and windows open as a result of mosquitoes and odor that come from the road sites.
Another resident, Mrs. Gladys Anyanwu, a teacher, disclosed that rainy seasons had worsened the area as passersby find it difficult to pass through the road as a result of the flood, dirtiness, and security concerns of the area.
She called on the state Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma to come to their rescue before they die.
Speaking further, Mrs. Betty Cheta, a trader, lamented that the road has turned into a death trap, noting that some churches have lost their members as a result of growing criminality on the road.
She, however, recalled that in 2022, the Chief of Staff to the Imo State Governor, Barr. Nnamdi Anyaehie, visited the area to inspect the evacuation of waste and wondered why the government of the day did not extend the road construction to this area.
Adding his voice, the Regional pastor of the Community of Hashem Owerri, Levite-Chidiebere Ofili decried the situation as very unbearable and called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to rescue people living around the area by evacuating the waste and building the road to enable them to enjoy fresh air and good road network.
He equally prayed to God to give Governor Uzodimma and his cabinet more wisdom to pilot the affairs of the State.
In the foregoing, children and pregnant women are at higher risk of health problems related to environmental pollution, hence the round call for rescue of the area to check crimes, bad roads and as well guarantee good health of Imo citizens.
