Governor Hope Uzodimma recently held a fruitful meeting with World Bank Country Director Mr. Ndiame Diop to deepen talks on strategic cooperation targeted at improving water supply services throughout Imo State.

The Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (SURWASH) Program, a flagship World Bank initiative, was the primary focus of the meeting. The program in Imo state aimed at improving access to securely managed water, sanitation, and hygiene for the state’s rural and urban residents in line with the state government’s Shared Prosperity Agenda.

In a statement, Governor Uzodimma underlined the significance of guaranteeing sustainable access to clean water while stressing the notable advancements already achieved in modernizing Imo’s water supply infrastructure and services through the Ministry of Water Resources and its affiliated agencies. Acccording to the governor, the meeting with the World Bank made it clear that delivering water that satisfies accessibility and hygiene standards is crucial for the general well-being of the state’s citizens.

The governor added that Imo State would get much-needed financial resources and technical know-how from the World Bank cooperation to strengthen sanitation services, advance sustainable water management, and upgrade water distribution systems. Governor Uzodimma further conveyed his confidence that the partnership would contribute to ensuring a better and more prosperous future for Imo State’s citizens.

“We are committed to fostering a sustainable approach to water management that supports our citizens’ well-being and meets the evolving needs of our urban and rural areas. I am optimistic about the positive impact this joint effort will have on our State’s water and sanitation services,” Governor Uzodimma said.

Addressing water scarcity, encouraging improved sanitation habits, and enhancing hygiene conditions—especially in underprivileged areas—are the objectives of the NG-SURWASH program. The initiative seeks to create a more robust and sustainable water management system in Imo State by utilizing the World Bank’s resources and experience.

The Governor directed the Commissioner of Water Resources Ozo Obinna Ogwuegbu to leverage on the renewed collaboration with the World bank along with the support he as Governor has provided the Ministry to improve the standard of living for the residents by providing sustainable water and sanitation solutions.
